A large-scale redesign of road junction geometry is set to reshape everyday mobility across Chennai, as civic authorities prepare a citywide programme to upgrade hundreds of road curves that often become bottlenecks for traffic movement and high-risk locations for pedestrians. The intervention signals a broader shift in Indian cities towards street design that prioritises safety, visibility and efficient use of public space rather than simply increasing road capacity.
Municipal planners are currently preparing a detailed blueprint to modernise around 600 junction bellmouths, the widened curved sections where roads merge or intersect. These spaces frequently determine whether traffic disperses smoothly or accumulates into congestion, particularly during peak travel hours. Work has already begun on an initial set of strategically important junctions spread across multiple zones of the city. The first package focuses on corridors carrying heavy bus movement and mixed traffic volumes, where poor visibility, narrow turning radii and damaged footpaths often force pedestrians into moving traffic.
Urban mobility specialists note that junction design remains one of the most overlooked elements of road infrastructure in rapidly growing metropolitan regions. While investments often concentrate on flyovers or corridor widening, unsafe turning points and missing pedestrian facilities continue to contribute disproportionately to road conflicts and delays.The upcoming redesign programme is expected to include wider pedestrian refuges, improved sightlines for motorists, better kerb alignments and upgraded pavements around turning sections. Such interventions can reduce vehicle idling time and improve traffic progression, producing secondary benefits through lower fuel consumption and reduced transport emissions.The move also reflects changing priorities in urban transport planning, where the quality of street design is increasingly viewed as an economic issue rather than only a mobility concern. Delays at intersections affect freight movement, bus reliability and worker productivity, while unsafe streets impose hidden social and healthcare costs on cities. Several of the identified locations sit along major transport corridors where municipal roads intersect with state highways, national highways and high-capacity bus routes. Improving these transition points could strengthen network efficiency without requiring extensive land acquisition or disruptive road expansion projects.
Funding support is expected to be sought through national urban infrastructure financing programmes, with civic officials aiming to accelerate implementation in phases. Authorities are also expected to seek public feedback before finalising additional locations for intervention.
