Ahmedabad is continuing to expand its affordable housing stock under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U), with nearly 1.94 lakh homes completed and more than 21,000 dwelling units already handed over to beneficiaries. The programme forms a key part of the city’s broader strategy to improve access to formal housing while supporting inclusive urban development.
According to municipal authorities, over 2.07 lakh housing units have been sanctioned under the scheme during the past decade, with construction progressing across multiple neighbourhoods. More than 10,000 additional homes are currently under construction, while the next phase of the programme aims to add around 50,000 new affordable housing units under PMAY 2.0. The Ahmedabad affordable housing programme primarily serves Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Lower Income Group (LIG) households. Residential developments are being equipped with essential civic infrastructure, including drinking water supply, elevators, fire safety systems, landscaped open spaces, parking facilities, anganwadi centres, healthcare services and piped natural gas connections, reflecting a shift towards integrated community planning rather than standalone housing projects. Several completed housing developments are located in areas including Ramapir Tekra, Odhav, Ghatlodia, Bopal, Janki Awas, Narmada Awas and other emerging residential clusters. In some locations, the programme has also supported the rehabilitation of families relocated from informal settlements, aligning housing delivery with urban renewal initiatives.
Urban development experts note that affordable housing plays a critical role in improving social inclusion and reducing pressure on informal settlements in rapidly expanding cities. However, they emphasise that long-term success depends on ensuring new housing projects are well connected to employment centres, public transport, schools, healthcare facilities and other essential urban services. Housing delivered without adequate supporting infrastructure often limits opportunities for economic mobility and community development.
Ahmedabad’s continued investment in affordable housing also reflects a broader national effort to address urban housing shortages through planned residential development. As the city expands, integrating housing projects with sustainable mobility, public amenities, green spaces and resilient infrastructure will become increasingly important in creating liveable neighbourhoods. With thousands of homes already occupied and additional projects underway, Ahmedabad’s affordable housing programme is expected to remain a significant contributor to the city’s urban transformation while supporting improved living conditions for lower-income households and promoting more balanced urban growth.
