Rail passengers travelling between western Tamil Nadu and the state capital are set to experience temporary changes in travel patterns this week as infrastructure work on a key railway junction prompts alterations to one of the region’s busiest daytime train services.
The operational changes affect the widely used Intercity connection linking Coimbatore with Chennai, a route heavily relied upon by business travellers, students, healthcare seekers and daily commuters moving between major economic centres in Tamil Nadu. While the disruption is limited to four days, transport experts note that such interventions underline the growing pressure on ageing railway infrastructure supporting rapidly expanding urban corridors.According to railway officials, engineering activity within the Arakkonam yard section requires adjustments to train movements passing through the junction. As a result, the Coimbatore-bound and Chennai-bound Intercity services will operate only on partial stretches between June 25 and June 28.During this period, trains originating from Coimbatore will terminate at Katpadi instead of completing the final leg into Chennai. Likewise, return services that usually begin from Chennai Central will commence operations from Katpadi, requiring passengers travelling to or from the metropolitan region to arrange alternative transport for the affected section.
The affected route forms an important mobility spine connecting manufacturing clusters in Coimbatore and Tiruppur with administrative, financial and educational institutions concentrated in Chennai.
