Tamil Nadu’s effort to strengthen regional mobility around Chennai is set to trigger a fresh redesign of a major transport project along the Grand Southern Trunk Road, potentially extending construction timelines while creating opportunities for more integrated public infrastructure. State authorities are pursuing a plan to integrate the proposed Metro extension with the elevated road corridor planned between the Kilambakkam bus terminus and Chettipunniyam near Mahindra City. The revised concept envisages a two-level structure, with a six-lane highway below and metro infrastructure above, replacing the earlier proposal that only included an elevated roadway. Officials involved in the process indicated that engineering studies and design specifications prepared earlier will require significant modifications. Structural elements such as pillars and support systems must now accommodate rail infrastructure in addition to vehicular traffic. The exercise is expected to prolong project preparation and could delay execution by around a year.
The proposed alignment forms a crucial transport spine connecting rapidly urbanising areas south of Chennai. These locations have witnessed increasing residential and industrial development, leading to rising pressure on existing road networks. Urban planners argue that combining mass transit with road infrastructure could improve connectivity while limiting repeated disruptions caused by separate phases of construction. According to senior officials familiar with the project, the financial framework will also need revision. Cost-sharing arrangements between the Centre and the state are likely to be recalibrated once the updated detailed project report is completed. The revised estimates will determine the extent of state participation in delivering the integrated corridor. Infrastructure experts say simultaneous execution of both facilities offers operational advantages. Constructing the metro components alongside the elevated highway could reduce future traffic diversions and minimise the environmental costs associated with repeated construction activity. The Metro extension itself remains dependent on approvals from the Union government. Pending clearances for the Airport-Kilambakkam section have created uncertainty over subsequent plans extending southward towards Chengalpattu. Transport specialists have noted that faster decisions on these approvals would provide greater certainty for investors, residents and industries located along the Chennai growth corridor. As Chennai continues expanding beyond its traditional boundaries, integrated transport systems are increasingly being viewed as essential to supporting economic development while promoting lower-carbon mobility.
