Water availability across Mumbai’s seven drinking water reservoirs has fallen to just 8.3 per cent of total useful storage, intensifying concerns over the city’s water security as the southwest monsoon continues to arrive unevenly across Maharashtra. The declining reserves are increasing pressure on civic authorities to balance immediate demand with long-term resource management while reinforcing the urgency of climate-resilient urban water planning. According to the latest reservoir status released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Hydraulic Engineer’s Department, the seven lakes together held 120,712 million litres of usable water as of June 22 against a combined live storage capacity of 1,447,363 million litres. The figures reflect the continuing drawdown of reserves following an extended pre-monsoon dry spell and slower-than-expected seasonal rainfall across key catchment areas.
Mumbai depends on seven reservoirs for its daily drinking water supply. While Tulsi and Vihar are located within the city, the larger reservoirs supplying the bulk of municipal demand—including Bhatsa, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna and Modak Sagar—lie in neighbouring districts. These regional water sources collectively sustain one of the world’s most densely populated metropolitan regions, making rainfall variability a critical urban governance challenge. Among the reservoirs, Bhatsa, the city’s largest source, has witnessed a particularly sharp decline. Against its live storage capacity of more than 717,000 million litres, available water has dropped to below eight per cent, highlighting the vulnerability of Mumbai’s supply system before substantial monsoon inflows begin. Water experts note that prolonged deficits in major reservoirs increase operational risks, especially if rainfall remains below seasonal expectations over the coming weeks. The civic administration had already imposed a 10 per cent reduction in water supply from mid-May as a precautionary measure.
Mumbai is presently receiving approximately 3,950 million litres of water each day, a controlled distribution strategy aimed at stretching existing reserves until reservoir inflows improve. At the current rate of consumption, available storage is estimated to support the city’s requirements for only a little over a month without significant rainfall replenishment. Urban planners argue that recurring water stress reflects broader climate challenges confronting rapidly expanding metropolitan regions. Increasing weather variability, rising urban demand, ageing distribution infrastructure and limited local storage capacity are placing additional strain on traditional reservoir-dependent systems. Experts suggest that investments in wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting, leak reduction, decentralised storage and watershed conservation will become increasingly important to strengthen long-term water resilience.
With the peak monsoon season approaching, authorities will closely monitor rainfall across reservoir catchments before deciding whether additional conservation measures become necessary. While sustained rainfall could quickly improve storage levels, the present situation reinforces the need for integrated urban water management that combines immediate supply security with long-term climate adaptation and sustainable resource planning.
