Smart City Panaji Restores Greenery with Translocated Banyan Tree

Panaji’s Smart City initiative has marked a significant milestone with the successful translocation of a mature banyan tree from a worksite in St Inez to the Parade Ground at Campal, Panaji. This relocation was necessitated by the Smart Road project, underscoring the city’s commitment to balancing urban development with environmental conservation.

Mayor Rohit Monserrate, who unveiled the translocated tree, commended the efforts of Smart City in preserving greenery amidst infrastructure expansion. He expressed confidence in the ongoing care and maintenance of the tree, highlighting the formation of a dedicated committee by Smart City to oversee city-wide greening initiatives.

The translocation process, described as intricate by senior officials of Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL), involved advanced techniques to ensure the tree’s health and stability post-relocation. “We adopted meticulous procedures to safeguard the banyan tree’s well-being during and after the move. Today, it stands as a testament to our commitment to sustainable urban development,” remarked an IPSCDL official.

Moreover, IPSCDL has established an advisory committee comprising experts in tree plantation and care. This committee will play a pivotal role in identifying suitable locations for new plantations across Panaji, prioritising areas in need of green spaces, and selecting tree species that offer both ecological benefits and aesthetic value.

“The advisory committee’s mandate extends beyond tree planting to include ongoing maintenance and sustainability efforts,” added the IPSCDL official. This holistic approach aims to enhance Panaji’s urban landscape while preserving its natural heritage.

The successful translocation of the banyan tree reflects Panaji’s proactive stance in integrating environmental stewardship with urban planning initiatives. As Smart City projects continue to unfold, stakeholders anticipate further enhancements in city aesthetics and environmental sustainability, guided by strategic greening initiatives and community engagement.
