Telangana is placing a Rs 98,000 crore bet on asphalt. The state government has announced a sweeping road infrastructure push aimed at making Telangana the national leader in road connectivity by 2028. The centrepiece projects include an eight-lane upgrade of the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway at Rs 20,000 crore, a greenfield corridor from Future City to Amaravati–Bandar Port at another Rs 20,000 crore, and the Regional Ring Road at Rs 36,000 crore. A state official confirmed that alignment proposals for the greenfield road have been submitted to the Union government.
A deputy chief minister, speaking after a review meeting, outlined the scale of ambition. The Regional Ring Road alone will reshape peri-urban travel across multiple districts. The state has already deposited Rs 628 crore as its share for land acquisition for the northern section with the National Highways Authority of India. In Hyderabad’s southern corridor, a double-decker elevated road from LB Nagar to Hayathnagar is being taken up at Rs 941 crore, with the Union government contributing Rs 741 crore. Urban infrastructure analysts note that the announcement arrives alongside sobering data. A roads and buildings minister disclosed that approximately 6,500 people died in road accidents in Telangana in 2025. The government is simultaneously launching the ‘Arrive Alive’ programme — a recognition that more roads without safety redesign can mean more fatalities. The challenge is whether the state can build at speed without compromising on pedestrian infrastructure, lighting, and intersection design.
The pipeline includes 6,000 kilometres of roads under the Hybrid Annuity Model at Rs 13,000 crore, with price bids finalised. A 52-kilometre elevated corridor from Mannanur to Srisailam has been allocated Rs 8,000 crore. A parallel alignment for a high-speed train alongside the greenfield road has also been proposed — an indicator that the government is thinking beyond cars. Meanwhile, Rs 148 crore has been approved for approach roads, with instructions to begin work immediately. For citizens, the question is not just about kilometres constructed but about travel time saved and safety improved. The government has set a 2028 deadline to claim the “leading state” title. Between now and then, every crore spent will be measured against the 6,500 lives lost annually on Telangana’s roads. Building fast is one thing. Building safe is another.
