Delhi’s urban planning authorities are experimenting with new ways to activate public green spaces by integrating arts education into city parks. A collaborative programme between the capital’s land development agency and a leading national theatre institution has launched a structured theatre education programme designed for young participants within a landscaped urban park environment. The initiative will take place over several weeks at an ecological park developed along the Yamuna riverfront. Targeted at children in early adolescence, the programme combines theatre training with outdoor learning activities. Urban planners say such initiatives can help reimagine city parks as active cultural spaces rather than passive recreational grounds.

Officials involved in the project say the theatre education programme has been designed to introduce participants to communication skills, creative expression and collaborative learning. Activities will include storytelling exercises, improvisation, physical movement sessions and performance training under the guidance of theatre professionals. The aim is to expose children to performing arts while also encouraging observation of the natural environment around them. Urban design experts note that integrating arts and culture within public landscapes is increasingly being adopted in cities around the world. Cultural programming can increase the social value of green spaces while encouraging greater public engagement with urban parks, particularly among younger residents. The programme will operate in scheduled afternoon sessions across a six-week period during the summer season. Participation is limited to a small group to ensure structured interaction between instructors and students. Authorities have introduced a registration process for the first batch of participants, with applications screened based on age eligibility and availability.

Officials say the workshops will culminate in a public performance where participants present what they have learned. Such performances are expected to encourage confidence among young learners while also bringing families and visitors into the park environment. The idea for the theatre education programme emerged from earlier cultural activities organised in the same park during an environmental exhibition earlier this year. Following positive feedback, the development authority formalised its collaboration with the theatre institution to design a more structured arts learning initiative within the park setting. Urban policy analysts view such experiments as part of a broader shift in how Indian cities manage open spaces. Traditionally, parks have been designed primarily for walking or leisure, but planners increasingly see them as potential venues for cultural programming, environmental education and community engagement. Environmental planners also emphasise that activities located within green landscapes can deepen public awareness of ecological issues. Learning and performing in outdoor environments may encourage young participants to develop a stronger connection with urban nature and conservation.

As cities continue to grow denser, the multifunctional use of public spaces is becoming increasingly important. By blending environmental design with arts education, initiatives like this attempt to demonstrate how urban parks can support both cultural development and community well-being. If successful, officials say similar theatre education programme models could be replicated in other public parks across Delhi, potentially transforming open spaces into platforms for creative learning and civic participation.
