Bengaluru’s Metro Services Disrupted After Suicide Attempt

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro services on the Purple Line experienced significant disruption on Monday night following an alleged suicide attempt by a 34-year-old passenger at Hosahalli station near Vijayanagar. The incident occurred at approximately 9pm, causing a temporary halt in train operations.

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials reported that the individual sustained head injuries and was promptly transported to a nearby hospital. The passenger, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar, is currently stable and out of danger.

In response to the incident, BMRCL officials had to implement emergency measures, operating loop trains from Mysuru Road station to Challaghatta and from Majestic to Whitefield. Normal services across the entire Purple Line were restored around 9:30pm. However, the temporary unavailability of trains from Majestic to Mysuru Road caused considerable inconvenience to passengers. The affected train was en route from Byappanahalli to Mysuru Road at the time of the incident. This marks the third such incident this year involving passengers either attempting or committing suicide by jumping onto the tracks. In March, a law student jumped in front of a moving train at Attiguppe station, and earlier in January, another man sustained severe injuries after jumping onto the track at Jalahalli station.

These recurring incidents have intensified the call from Metro passengers for the installation of platform screen doors, which could potentially prevent such tragic events. The demand underscores the need for enhanced safety measures within the metro system to protect passengers and ensure uninterrupted service. The BMRCL’s quick response in managing the disruption and restoring normal operations is commendable, but the incident highlights the critical importance of mental health awareness and support systems.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, it is crucial to seek help. Contact suicide-prevention helplines such as Tele-Manas at 14416 or 1800-891-4416, and SAHAI Helpline at 080-25497777 for emotional support.

The repeated instances of such incidents on the metro lines point to a pressing need for better mental health resources and preventive infrastructure. The integration of platform screen doors could be a significant step towards ensuring passenger safety and preventing future disruptions. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address mental health issues proactively and the importance of creating safer public transportation environments.
