Delhi Dwarka Medical College Project Gets Green Design
Delhi’s public healthcare infrastructure is set for a significant expansion with plans for a new Dwarka Medical College in the capital’s southwest district. The proposed government institution, estimated to cost about ₹806 crore, will be developed in Sector 17 near an existing public hospital, forming part of the city’s broader strategy to expand healthcare access and medical education capacity. Urban development and health officials say the Dwarka Medical College project will occupy more than 46,000 square meters and be constructed in stages. The campus is designed to integrate teaching, residential and sustainability-focused infrastructure within a single institutional zone, reflecting the city administration’s push to modernize health facilities while incorporating climate-conscious building practices.
At the center of the plan is an eight-store academic building intended to house digitally equipped classrooms, lecture theatres and training spaces. Officials involved in the planning process indicate that the teaching block will incorporate audio-visual learning systems and interactive digital infrastructure designed to support modern medical education. A large lecture hall capable of accommodating around 150 students and specialized laboratories for practical training are also included in the design. A central library designed for hundreds of students will form another key element of the campus. Urban planners note that expanding academic infrastructure alongside healthcare services is essential for cities like Delhi, where demand for trained medical professionals continues to rise with population growth. Student housing has also been built into the design of the Dwarka Medical College. Separate hostels for male and female students are planned, each with accommodation capacity for several hundred residents. In addition, residential buildings for faculty members will be constructed within the campus precinct, offering multiple apartment configurations for teaching staff. Officials say the objective is to create a self-contained academic environment that supports both learning and research.
Security and safety infrastructure will be integrated throughout the campus. Proposed systems include digital access controls, fire detection and suppression technology, and surveillance networks designed to maintain safety in academic and residential zones. The project also reflects a broader shift towards environmentally responsible institutional buildings. The campus is expected to incorporate renewable energy generation through solar power installations, rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater recycling infrastructure. Treated water from on-site sewage treatment facilities will be reused for landscaping and non-potable purposes, reducing the campus’s environmental footprint. Electric vehicle charging stations are also planned as part of the facility, aligning the project with Delhi’s wider push for cleaner mobility and reduced urban emissions. Urban policy experts say investments in institutions such as the Dwarka Medical College demonstrate how healthcare expansion and sustainable infrastructure can be planned together.
