Chandigarh Region Gets Boost As Zirakpur Bypass Moves Ahead

The long-delayed Zirakpur bypass project has finally moved closer to execution after the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) awarded the construction contract, clearing the way for work to begin in the coming weeks. The development is significant for the Chandigarh-Mohali-Panchkula urban region, where heavy inter-state traffic and rapid real estate growth have turned Zirakpur into one of the most congested entry points to the Tricity.

The six-lane bypass, planned at a cost of more than ₹1,800 crore, is designed to divert long-distance traffic away from densely built urban corridors that currently carry both regional commuters and heavy freight vehicles. According to recent reports on the project, the proposed alignment will connect key national highways passing through Zirakpur and Panchkula, allowing vehicles heading towards Himachal Pradesh or Punjab to avoid the highly urbanised stretch that has struggled to cope with rising traffic volumes. The project has been under discussion for more than a decade, but progress slowed repeatedly due to environmental approvals, land acquisition challenges and delays in tendering. Earlier this year, the bypass received key clearances that allowed bidding to move forward, and officials indicated that construction would begin once the contract was finalised. The award of the work now marks the first concrete step toward implementation after years of policy announcements without on-ground execution. Urban planners say the bypass could significantly reshape mobility patterns in the Chandigarh metropolitan region. Zirakpur has emerged as a major residential and commercial growth hub over the past decade, with high-rise housing, logistics activity and retail development expanding rapidly along the highway corridors.

However, road capacity has not kept pace with this growth, resulting in long travel delays, particularly during peak hours and holiday traffic towards Himachal Pradesh. The bypass is also expected to support a broader network of road infrastructure being planned across the Tricity. Recent approvals for a new greenfield road link connecting the Ambala-Chandigarh expressway to the Zirakpur bypass highlight how the project is being positioned as a central component of a larger regional mobility plan. Once completed, the network is expected to divert non-local traffic away from the core urban areas of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, improving travel time and reducing congestion within the city grid. From an urban development perspective, the project reflects a shift in how infrastructure is being planned in fast-growing satellite towns. Instead of expanding roads only within city limits, planners are increasingly investing in peripheral corridors that separate long-distance traffic from local urban movement. Experts believe this approach can improve safety, reduce pollution in residential areas and make city transport systems more efficient, particularly in regions where population growth is being driven by migration and real estate expansion.

If construction progresses as planned, the Zirakpur bypass could become one of the most significant mobility interventions in the Chandigarh region in recent years. For residents, the immediate benefit may come in the form of shorter travel times and reduced congestion, while in the longer term the project is expected to support more sustainable and organised urban growth across the rapidly expanding Tricity corridor.
