Kochi: Kochi’s bustling Water Metro service, already a favorite among tourists and locals alike, is poised for a significant expansion with the establishment of 21 new terminals in and around the city, enhancing connectivity and accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
The Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML) has presented proposals for the construction of these new terminals to the French Development Agency (AFD), the project’s funding body. Pending approval from the AFD, KWML will proceed with issuing tenders for the construction of these terminals, aiming to bolster the Water Metro’s network. The Water Metro initiative envisions a comprehensive network of 36 water terminals, facilitating seamless transportation across various areas, including islands, within Kochi. Currently, KWML operates services connecting 10 terminals using 14 electric-hybrid boats, with construction already underway for five additional terminals at strategic locations.
Tenders for the remaining 21 terminals are imminent, with plans swiftly progressing to expand the Water Metro’s footprint across the city. The initial count of terminals stood at 38 but was revised to 36 following expressions of interest from Aster Medcity and Amrita Hospital to construct two terminals independently near their respective establishments. Anticipation surrounds the imminent approval of terminal proposals by the AFD, with KWML prepared to make any necessary revisions to meet regulatory standards. Meanwhile, construction efforts for the existing five terminals are advancing rapidly, with additional boats from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) expected to bolster KWML’s fleet next month.
The launch of the country’s first Water Metro services in April 2023 marked a significant milestone in Kochi’s transportation landscape, revolutionizing water transport in the state. Witnessing over 20 lakh passengers utilizing the services within a year underscores the immense popularity and utility of the Water Metro. However, challenges persist, particularly in meeting the demand for boats to accommodate the growing passenger numbers. To address this, Kochi Metro authorities have initiated tenders to acquire 15 additional Water Metro boats, supplementing the existing fleet procured from CSL. With 14 boats already delivered, these acquisitions aim to enhance the efficiency and reach of the Water Metro, further solidifying its status as a pivotal mode of transportation in Kochi’s urban ecosystem.
