Pune’s urban transport landscape is set to undergo a significant transformation with the arrival of the first Indian-made train set for Metro Line 3, a development that underscores the growing emphasis on indigenous manufacturing and advanced urban mobility solutions.
Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. (PITCMRL) has contracted Alstom to deliver 22 train sets for this 23-kilometre elevated corridor, which will link the bustling IT hub of Hinjewadi with the central business district of Shivajinagar.
The new train set, comprising three cars with a combined capacity to carry 1,000 passengers, marks a significant milestone for the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The project, managed by PITCMRL, highlights the collaboration between PMRDA and the Tata Group under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aiming to enhance the city’s urban transport infrastructure.
Manufactured at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, the train has arrived at the Maan depot, signifying the commencement of a new era in Pune’s metro services. This development is part of a broader initiative to bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities in alignment with the ‘Make in India’ mission, promoting self-reliance in high-tech transportation systems.
The Metro Line 3 project is not only pivotal for easing the congestion in Pune’s traffic but also crucial for boosting economic activities by connecting key commercial zones. The 23-kilometre stretch promises to revolutionise the daily commute for thousands of professionals and residents, ensuring a more efficient and comfortable transit experience.
The consortium awarded the PPP project includes Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (TUTPL) and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH, further strengthening the collaborative effort to deliver this vital infrastructure. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) plays a central role in steering this project towards successful completion, ensuring that it adheres to the highest standards of safety and efficiency.
With the integration of these advanced, locally-manufactured train sets, Pune Metro Line 3 is poised to set a new benchmark in urban transport. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar, thus improving the overall quality of life for Pune’s residents and supporting the city’s growth trajectory.
The arrival of the first ‘Made in India’ train set for Pune Metro Line 3 is a landmark achievement that reflects the synergy between public and private sectors in enhancing urban mobility. It signifies a leap forward in providing sustainable, efficient, and locally-produced transportation solutions that are set to benefit Pune’s burgeoning urban population.
