Kolkata’s municipal authorities have begun modernising critical water infrastructure in Salt Lake, introducing new pumping systems and structural upgrades aimed at improving the efficiency of neighbourhood supply networks.
The Salt Lake water tank upgrade focuses on refurbishing ageing reservoirs and installing submersible pumps that allow stored water to be fully utilised, helping reduce supply gaps in the planned township.
Salt Lake, developed as one of Kolkata’s earliest organised urban extensions, relies on a network of elevated reservoirs that distribute treated water to residential blocks through an interconnected pipeline grid. However, many of these storage structures were built decades ago and had gradually become less efficient due to ageing equipment and outdated pumping technology.Officials involved in the project said that several tanks had shown structural deterioration and operational limitations over time. In particular, earlier pumping systems located outside the reservoirs struggled to move water when levels fell below certain points. As a result, portions of stored water often remained unused, while households experienced temporary supply fluctuations.The Salt Lake water tank upgrade addresses this limitation through the installation of submersible pumps placed directly within the reservoirs. These pumps are designed to draw water even when levels are low, ensuring that the full storage capacity can be utilised before fresh water is pumped in. Engineers say the change improves pressure stability across the distribution network and reduces the risk of shortages during peak demand periods.Three reservoirs have completed renovation under the current phase of the programme.
Each serves clusters of residential blocks but is connected to a wider grid that allows water to be redistributed if one tank temporarily underperforms. Urban planners note that such interconnected systems are increasingly important in dense metropolitan regions where ageing infrastructure must adapt to changing demand patterns.The broader Salt Lake reservoir network includes more than a dozen tanks that collectively support the township’s daily water needs. Supply is sourced from the city’s larger treatment and transmission systems, including pipelines delivering treated water from northern Kolkata as well as facilities serving newer eastern neighbourhoods.The modernisation programme has also incorporated site improvements around the renovated tanks, including landscaping, pathways and structural repairs intended to improve safety and maintenance access. Urban infrastructure specialists say such upgrades are necessary to extend the life of civic assets that support rapidly growing metropolitan populations.Funding for the first phase of the Salt Lake water tank upgrade forms part of a wider national urban renewal initiative that supports water supply improvements, drainage infrastructure and climate-resilient services in cities. Civic officials estimate that the project represents a significant investment in strengthening local utilities.
Alongside reservoir upgrades, authorities have also initiated work on additional pumping infrastructure aimed at improving drainage capacity in nearby blocks prone to waterlogging during intense rainfall. With climate variability increasing pressure on urban infrastructure, planners say strengthening both supply and stormwater systems will be essential to maintaining reliable services in Kolkata’s expanding metropolitan landscape.
