Chennai’s Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced a new premium air-conditioned bus service, Golden Chariot, aimed at improving urban mobility and enhancing commuter comfort along critical IT and residential corridors.
Initially deployed on routes connecting Koyambedu to Siruseri IT Park and Thiruvanmiyur to Tambaram, the service seeks to provide faster, safer, and more accessible travel options for the city’s daily commuters.
Urban transport planners note that Chennai faces growing traffic pressures, particularly along the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) IT corridor, where conventional bus services struggle to maintain punctuality during peak hours. The introduction of a modern, conductor-less premium fleet is seen as a step toward improving service reliability and attracting higher ridership among professionals who rely on efficient, comfortable public transit for daily commutes.The Golden Chariot buses feature several enhancements, including luxury seating, USB charging ports, free Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance, emergency alert systems, and digital route displays. The service is also designed with inclusivity in mind, providing wheelchair-accessible seating and dedicated reservation facilities for differently-abled passengers. Ticketing for the service ranges from ₹50 to ₹150, with bookings facilitated via the Chennai One mobile application.
