Andhra Pradesh is stepping up efforts to complete the Polavaram Irrigation Project ahead of the upcoming Godavari Pushkarams, signalling a significant boost to regional water management and agricultural infrastructure. The state government has outlined a strategic plan to ensure timely completion while maintaining structural integrity and operational efficiency.
Water resources officials report that finalising Polavaram will enable regulated distribution of Godavari waters to both the Rayalaseema and North Andhra regions, supporting irrigation, drinking water supply, and local livelihoods. Senior engineers highlighted that completing the project before the Pushkarams is crucial, as increased ceremonial and domestic water demand coincides with seasonal flows.Authorities emphasised that the project has undergone rigorous engineering reviews. A key component, the diaphragm wall, was found to have structural deficiencies during prior administrations. The current government has opted to replace the compromised section rather than repair it, prioritising long-term stability and safety of the dam.Urban planners and water resource experts note that Polavaram represents more than an irrigation project; it is integral to sustainable water management and regional economic development. By controlling seasonal flows, the project is expected to reduce flood risks, improve groundwater recharge, and provide reliable water supply for agriculture and emerging industrial zones.
Officials are also monitoring auxiliary works linked to canals, power generation, and associated reservoirs to ensure coordinated project completion. These measures are intended to maximise the social and economic impact, particularly for farming communities dependent on timely water release for cropping cycles.Beyond irrigation, experts say Polavaram could act as a model for balancing infrastructure development with environmental and community considerations. Ensuring robust construction and phased commissioning allows the state to address both current water scarcity challenges and long-term climate variability, reinforcing resilience in the region’s water network. With continued monitoring and phased implementation, the state aims to make the Polavaram project fully operational before the Pushkarams, offering both ceremonial and practical benefits while supporting inclusive and sustainable regional growth.
