United Drilling Tools Secures ONGC Casing Pipe Order

India’s domestic oilfield equipment manufacturing sector has received a fresh boost after engineering firm United Drilling Tools Ltd secured a new contract from the state-run energy major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) to supply specialised casing pipes used in drilling operations.

The order, valued at approximately ₹3.73 crore, involves the supply of large outer diameter (OD) casing pipes, which play a critical structural role in oil and gas well construction. The contract is expected to be executed over the next five to six months, according to company disclosures.Casing pipes are an essential component in offshore and onshore drilling projects. They are installed in wellbores to stabilise the structure and protect drilling operations from geological pressure, ensuring operational safety and structural integrity during oil and gas extraction.Industry analysts say such orders highlight the growing importance of domestic manufacturers in supplying specialised equipment to India’s upstream energy sector. As exploration and production activities expand to support the country’s long-term energy needs, the demand for advanced drilling tools and infrastructure components is expected to increase.

United Drilling Tools operates in a niche segment of the oilfield equipment market and is currently the only domestic supplier of these specialised large-diameter casing pipe products. This positioning allows the company to play a key role in supporting domestic energy companies seeking reliable and locally manufactured drilling components. The ONGC casing pipe order also reflects a broader trend in India’s energy sector, where public sector companies are increasingly relying on domestic engineering firms to strengthen local supply chains. Encouraging indigenous manufacturing of specialised industrial equipment aligns with the country’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on imported oilfield technologies.

Energy infrastructure remains closely connected to urban and industrial development. Oil and gas production continues to supply critical inputs for transportation fuels, petrochemicals and power generation, all of which support economic activity and city growth. For infrastructure planners, ensuring a stable supply of drilling equipment and upstream technology is essential to maintaining energy security. Domestic production of specialised components such as casing pipes can shorten supply chains and reduce operational risks for energy projects.

Although modest in value, the ONGC casing pipe order contributes to the company’s expanding order book and reinforces its long-standing commercial relationship with India’s largest exploration and production company.Energy analysts note that upstream drilling activity tends to increase when crude oil prices remain firm, encouraging exploration and production companies to invest in new wells and field development. This typically translates into stronger demand for drilling tools, casing equipment and related engineering services.

As India continues to expand domestic energy production alongside renewable investments, specialised manufacturers such as United Drilling Tools Ltd are expected to remain important contributors to the country’s industrial and energy infrastructure ecosystem.
