Delhi Approves ₹55 Crore Project For 81-ft Lord Ram Statue

Authorities in Delhi have approved a major religious and cultural infrastructure project with the sanctioning of an 81-foot statue of Lord Ram in the Mangolpuri area of northwest Delhi.

The project, estimated to cost about ₹55 crore, has been cleared by the Delhi Village Development Board as part of local development initiatives. The statue will be installed at Hanuman Mandir Park in Mangolpur Kalan, located in Mangolpuri. Officials said the plan includes ₹50 crore specifically allocated for constructing the statue, while the remaining funds will be used for landscaping, infrastructure upgrades and related development works in the surrounding park area.

According to officials, the proposal emerged from longstanding local demands for a prominent Ram statue in the area. Community representatives and religious groups had requested the government to develop a landmark monument dedicated to Lord Ram, similar in scale to other iconic religious statues in the capital. The design of the monument is expected to mirror the scale and visual prominence of the well-known statue of Hanuman near Jhandewalan Hanuman Mandir, one of Delhi’s most recognisable religious landmarks. Officials believe the new statue could become a significant cultural attraction in northwest Delhi while also enhancing the aesthetic character of the local park. Urban planners note that such monument-based projects are increasingly being used by city administrations to create cultural identity markers within neighbourhoods. In rapidly expanding metropolitan areas like Delhi, large statues, religious complexes and themed public spaces often serve dual purposes: strengthening community identity while also contributing to local tourism and public space development.

The Mangolpuri project will also include improvements to surrounding infrastructure, including better pathways, lighting, landscaping and visitor facilities. These enhancements are expected to transform the park area into a more accessible and organised public space for residents and visitors. Mangolpuri, historically known for its residential colonies and industrial clusters, has been undergoing gradual civic improvements in recent years. Local development projects, including park upgrades, road improvements and community facilities, are part of a broader effort to improve infrastructure in outer districts of the capital. The proposed statue also reflects a wider national trend where cities across India are building large statues of historical, cultural or religious figures to create symbolic landmarks. Several states have pursued similar initiatives aimed at promoting heritage tourism and strengthening local identity.

Construction timelines for the Mangolpuri statue have not yet been publicly detailed, but officials say planning and design work will begin soon following the approval of funds. If completed as planned, the 81-foot statue is expected to become one of the tallest religious monuments in Delhi and a prominent cultural landmark for residents of northwest Delhi.
