Thane Zilla Parishad is set to strengthen student safety by installing CCTV networks in 1,329 schools across the district, with completion targeted by April 2026. The initiative, executed in two phases, aims to bring rural and semi-urban schools under digital surveillance, enhancing oversight of school premises and providing a safer environment for students in the wake of past security incidents.
The first phase, funded through the district planning committee’s 2024–25 allocation, focused on 542 schools, with installation already completed in 524 institutions. Key talukas such as Kalyan and Bhiwandi saw 120 and 308 cameras installed respectively, while Ambernath received 96 cameras. Work continues in 18 schools in the first-phase clusters. The second phase, supported by the 2025–26 fiscal budget, targets 329 schools in Murbad and 457 schools in Shahapur, ensuring full coverage by April 2026. According to officials from the primary education department, the surveillance network is designed not only to monitor student activities but also to improve transparency, campus discipline, and administrative oversight. A senior education officer highlighted that integrating technology into school infrastructure helps deter misconduct while providing evidence-based support for school management and security staff.
