Ahmedabad’s municipal administration has cleared a large package of urban projects aimed at upgrading transport links, civic utilities and public spaces across the city. The decision to approve works valued at roughly ₹2,500 crore marks one of the largest recent Ahmedabad civic infrastructure investment programmes, combining bridge reconstruction, road expansion, drainage upgrades and public amenities to support the city’s rapid urban growth.
Among the most significant components is the planned rehabilitation of Subhash Bridge, a key road corridor spanning the Sabarmati River that was closed earlier after structural concerns emerged. Municipal engineers have now finalised a redevelopment strategy that involves replacing the bridge’s superstructure and strengthening the overall structure to ensure long-term durability and safety.
The bridge is an important traffic link connecting several neighbourhoods and industrial areas. Urban mobility planners say restoring the crossing is essential for maintaining east-west traffic flow in the city, particularly as vehicle volumes continue to rise alongside economic activity. The renovation project is expected to be executed in stages, beginning with reconstruction of the main bridge deck before adding additional lanes through parallel structures on both sides.
Officials involved in planning the project indicate that the bridge modernisation will incorporate new prestressed concrete girders, upgraded bearings and improved waterproofing systems to enhance resilience against structural wear. Pedestrian facilities and protective barriers are also part of the design, reflecting a broader shift towards safer and more inclusive road infrastructure. Beyond the bridge project, the Ahmedabad civic infrastructure package allocates a substantial portion of funds to road development across multiple urban zones. Transport planners say the initiative includes the creation of a major arterial route linking Naroda and Narol, intended to strengthen connectivity across industrial and residential districts while easing congestion on existing corridors.
Urban utilities form another significant part of the investment programme. Municipal engineers have outlined works related to drainage networks, water supply improvements and upgrades to civic facilities in different wards. These upgrades are expected to address infrastructure pressure in rapidly expanding neighbourhoods where population growth has outpaced existing service capacity.
Public institutions and heritage structures will also see restoration and improvement works under the approved programme. Several educational campuses, historic buildings and religious sites are among locations identified for conservation and maintenance projects. Urban development specialists say such initiatives can help preserve architectural heritage while maintaining the functionality of older civic spaces. The municipal administration has additionally approved the development of new public amenities, including a landscaped garden in the city’s western outskirts designed to enhance recreational spaces for residents. Expanding green public areas is increasingly seen by planners as a way to improve urban liveability while helping moderate rising temperatures in dense city environments. Another component of the plan focuses on digital governance. The city’s complaint management platform is set to be upgraded using artificial intelligence tools that will allow authorities to track service requests more effectively and document work completion through visual verification.
Transport engineers also confirmed that new traffic junction improvements will be implemented across the city as part of a wider effort to streamline traffic movement and improve pedestrian safety. Urban policy analysts note that coordinated investments in transport, utilities and digital systems are becoming critical as Indian cities prepare for rising population densities and expanding economic roles.
