Hyderabad Lonza Global Capability Centre Announced

Global contract development and manufacturing major Lonza Group AG has selected Hyderabad for its next Global Capability Centre, reinforcing the city’s expanding role in the international biopharmaceutical value chain and signalling continued investor confidence in Telangana’s life sciences ecosystem. The Switzerland-headquartered firm, which operates more than 30 sites worldwide, confirmed that Hyderabad emerged as the preferred location following a multi-city evaluation process. Industry officials indicate that talent availability, established pharmaceutical manufacturing clusters and digital infrastructure were key factors in the final decision.

The proposed Global Capability Centre (GCC) is expected to support research, development, technical operations and global business services aligned with Lonza’s contract development and manufacturing operations. While financial details have not been disclosed, the centre is projected to generate high-value employment across scientific, regulatory and data-driven roles over the coming years.Hyderabad has steadily positioned itself as a strategic node for life sciences and biotechnology, anchored by Genome Valley and supported by a strong base of vaccine manufacturers, biologics companies and pharmaceutical exporters. Analysts note that the city’s comparative cost advantage, combined with a deep pool of skilled graduates from engineering and pharmacy institutions, has made it attractive for multinational GCC expansions.

State industry officials confirmed that discussions with the company had been under way for several months, involving coordination between the Industries and Commerce Department and sector-focused agencies such as Telangana Lifesciences. The engagement reportedly centred on workforce readiness, regulatory facilitation and long-term infrastructure support.Global Capability Centres have become a significant component of India’s urban economic strategy, particularly in cities seeking to move up the value chain from manufacturing to innovation-led services. Unlike traditional back-office operations, contemporary GCCs increasingly house advanced analytics, process engineering, and digital transformation teams that integrate closely with parent companies’ global operations.Urban economists suggest that such investments have multiplier effects beyond direct employment. High-skilled scientific jobs can stimulate demand for specialised housing, commercial real estate, laboratory infrastructure and urban amenities. They also deepen linkages with local startups and research institutions, strengthening the broader innovation ecosystem.

Lonza reported sales of CHF 6.5 billion in 2025, underscoring its scale within the global CDMO segment. Its decision to anchor a new capability centre in Hyderabad reflects the growing convergence of pharmaceutical manufacturing and digital process optimisation — a combination that cities with integrated industrial and technology bases are well placed to support. As global biopharma supply chains diversify and resilience becomes a strategic priority, Hyderabad’s ability to provide skilled talent, compliant infrastructure and stable policy frameworks will determine whether it can sustain momentum as a long-term life sciences hub rather than a cyclical investment destination.
