Bengaluru’s central business corridor is set for a temporary but significant disruption as a 2.2-kilometre stretch of MG Road undergoes resurfacing from March 5. The municipal authorities have scheduled the work between Trinity Circle and Cubbon Park Police Station Circle, aiming to improve commuter safety and road quality while accommodating growing traffic pressures in the city’s commercial heart.

Urban planners note that arterial roads like MG Road are critical not just for daily commuting but also for maintaining economic activity in the city centre. The decision to proceed with evening and overnight milling removing damaged asphalt before laying new layers reflects a compromise between infrastructure improvement and minimising daytime congestion. Vehicles will temporarily traverse milled sections before full asphalting, while traffic diversions will be implemented during the final resurfacing phase. The project follows several planning adjustments. Initial proposals for concrete white-topping were abandoned after traffic authorities highlighted the risk of prolonged closures causing citywide gridlock. Similarly, parallel pipeline upgrades along the corridor were postponed, as the accelerated resurfacing schedule could not accommodate comprehensive underground works. A senior municipal engineer highlighted that these changes were necessary to balance infrastructure quality with operational continuity for both commuters and local businesses.

From an economic perspective, the resurfacing is part of a broader urban investment programme targeting seven key city roads, supported by a dedicated ₹25-crore fund. Real estate analysts suggest that improvements to MG Road, a high-profile commercial and retail stretch, may indirectly benefit property valuations and business footfall once completed, reinforcing the link between city maintenance and economic vibrancy. Experts in sustainable urban development emphasise the importance of integrating climate resilience in such projects. Asphalt resurfacing, if combined with proper drainage and heat-reflective materials, can mitigate urban flooding and heat accumulation in high-density corridors. Civic authorities have signalled plans for debris clearance and phased work to reduce environmental impact and ensure pedestrian and vehicular safety during construction.

For residents and businesses, the next two weeks will likely entail minor delays, route adjustments, and increased reliance on alternative transport options. Urban mobility specialists recommend careful planning for daily commutes and suggest that the municipal strategy of staggered, overnight work reflects a growing trend of “people-first” urban infrastructure scheduling. While temporary inconvenience is inevitable, the resurfacing represents an incremental but crucial step toward modernising Bengaluru’s transport backbone, improving commuter experience, and supporting sustainable city development in the long term.
