Telangana Cab Drivers’ ‘No AC Campaign’ Ignites Fare Fairness Debate

HYDERABAD: The recent initiation of a “no AC campaign” by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) has ignited a contentious discussion surrounding declining per kilometre fares and the plight of cab drivers operating under popular ride-hailing platforms such as Uber, Ola, and Rapido.

The TGPWU, representing a significant cohort of drivers in the state, has embarked on this campaign to draw attention to the deteriorating economic conditions faced by drivers, exacerbated by diminishing per kilometre rates. As a consequence, many drivers find themselves unable to afford the luxury of switching on air conditioning (AC) during rides. In response to the campaign, drivers have reported a surprising level of understanding and solidarity from commuters, who have shown empathy towards their financial struggles. Despite initial apprehensions, many passengers have willingly offered additional fares, recognising the challenges posed by rising fuel prices and inflation on drivers’ livelihoods.

One cab driver in the city remarked, “It’s heartening to see that customers are empathising with our situation. Many have voluntarily offered extra fares, acknowledging that cab drivers are being unfairly compensated for their services.” This demonstration of support from commuters underscores a growing awareness of the financial hardships faced by gig workers in the transportation sector. Amidst this backdrop, concerns persist over the absence of uniform fare regulations across different ride-hailing platforms. While some aggregators have recently implemented fare increases, drivers are advocating for more comprehensive measures to ensure fair compensation and financial stability.

The ‘no AC campaign’ serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by gig workers in the transportation industry and underscores the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve fair and sustainable working conditions. As the debate over fare fairness intensifies, stakeholders are called upon to engage in constructive dialogue and seek viable solutions to ensure the well-being of both drivers and passengers alike.
