Hyderabad’s public transport network is set for a functional upgrade as the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation begins fitting luggage racks in 150 city buses on a pilot basis, alongside a temporary summer fare reduction for air-conditioned services within the Outer Ring Road corridor.
The initiative, targeted at improving daily commuting conditions, reflects growing recognition that small design interventions can significantly influence public transport adoption in dense urban regions. For a city expanding rapidly beyond its historic core, commuter comfort is emerging as a key factor in shifting travel behaviour away from private vehicles.According to senior transport officials, the luggage rack installation follows trial runs in a limited number of buses, where passenger response was assessed before scaling up. Unlike intercity coaches, the racks designed for Hyderabad’s city buses are compact and positioned to accommodate peak-hour standing passengers. The fittings are being undertaken at the corporation’s in-house bus body unit, with an estimated outlay of around ₹15,000 per vehicle.
Urban mobility experts say such retrofits address an often-overlooked pain point for students, office-goers and small traders who carry backpacks, laptop bags or goods during daily travel. In crowded buses, limited storage space can slow boarding and alighting times, affecting overall service efficiency. By relocating baggage overhead, operators may improve aisle circulation and reduce friction during rush hours.The move comes as Hyderabad continues to grapple with traffic congestion and rising vehicle ownership. Public transport improvements—whether through fleet modernisation, comfort enhancements or fare rationalisation—are seen as essential to meeting climate and air-quality goals. In a parallel measure, the corporation has announced a 30 per cent reduction in fares for 90 air-conditioned buses operating within the Outer Ring Road limits from March through May. The discounted services include airport-linked routes and other premium city operations. Officials indicated that aligning AC fares closer to standard express services during peak summer months could encourage more commuters to opt for public transport rather than private cars or app-based cabs.Transport economists note that temporary fare adjustments during extreme weather periods can serve as behavioural nudges, particularly in cities experiencing intensifying heatwaves. If successful, such strategies could support higher ridership while easing road congestion.
