NHPC Aims to Finish Parbati-II by December 2024

State-owned NHPC (National Hydroelectric Power Corporation) has announced that all four units of its Parbati-II hydroelectric project are expected to be operational by December 2024.

The Parbati-II project, located in Himachal Pradesh, boasts an 800 MW capacity, with four units each generating 200 MW. Additionally, NHPC is advancing the construction of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower hydroelectric project, situated along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. This project comprises eight units, each with a 250 MW capacity. The company’s latest update indicates that three units of the Subansiri Lower project are anticipated to be completed by March 2025, with the remaining units projected to be finished by May 2026 in a phased manner. In another significant development, NHPC provided an update on its 510 MW Teesta-V power station in Sikkim, which includes three units of 170 MW each. The initial assessment of losses due to material damage and business interruption, initially estimated at Rs 788 crore, has been revised upward to Rs 1,005.10 crore.

This adjustment comprises Rs 297 crore towards material damage and Rs 491 crore towards business interruption loss. The completion timelines for the Parbati-II and Subansiri Lower projects underscore NHPC’s commitment to enhancing India’s hydroelectric capacity. The Parbati-II project, upon its completion, is expected to contribute significantly to the region’s power supply, supporting the broader goals of sustainable energy development and energy security. The Subansiri Lower project, the largest hydroelectric project currently under construction in India, is pivotal for the power infrastructure of the northeastern states. Its phased completion approach aims to ensure a steady increase in power availability, mitigating potential delays and enhancing regional energy stability.

NHPC’s strategic progress in these hydroelectric projects reflects its robust project management capabilities and commitment to meeting the country’s growing energy demands. Despite challenges, including the revised loss assessment for the Teesta-V station, the company remains focused on delivering these critical infrastructure projects on schedule. “All 4 units of the project are anticipated to be completed by December 2024,” the company said in a regulatory filing. “This loss may be liable to change as per final execution. The on-account part payment of Rs 150 crore has been approved for disbursement to NHPC by insurance company and release of the same has been initiated by insurer,” the company said on the insurance amount claimed and realised.
