The Maharashtra government has cleared key infrastructure projects, including the upgradation of National Highway 160A, aimed at alleviating traffic congestion in Mumbai and Thane while improving regional freight connectivity. The 154-kilometre Ghoti–Trimbak–Jawhar–Manor–Palghar corridor will be developed as a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, with select urban stretches expanded to four lanes. Officials indicate that the initiative will provide a strategic alternative to heavily used routes, reducing urban road pressure and facilitating smoother movement of vehicles from Mumbai and southern Maharashtra.
Currently, heavy traffic from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region enters Nashik and adjoining districts via NH-848 and NH-60, causing frequent bottlenecks. The upgraded NH-160A will link to the Samruddhi Expressway interchange at Igatpuri, providing a bypass for vehicles and mitigating congestion in densely populated urban centres. Traffic projections suggest that by 2028, over 10,000 vehicles per day will utilise the corridor, triggering four-lane expansion in high-traffic sections. The Trimbak–Manor–Palghar segment will connect seamlessly with the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and National Highway 48, enhancing regional integration and strengthening links to the western coastal belt and tribal areas in Palghar district. Urban stretches experiencing over 12,000 vehicles daily are slated for widening to maintain optimal traffic flow, reduce travel time, and lower vehicle operating costs. Urban planners note that such interventions are critical to ensuring that expanding transport demand does not overwhelm existing infrastructure.
From an economic standpoint, the corridor is expected to generate substantial employment, with direct and indirect opportunities projected during construction and ancillary services. Industry experts also highlight that improving highway connectivity supports equitable regional development by enhancing access to industrial estates, ports, and multi-modal transport nodes. The project is aligned with the PM GatiShakti framework, integrating road infrastructure with broader logistics, freight, and urban mobility objectives. Environmental and social considerations are also central to the project. By diverting heavy freight away from congested urban roads, emissions and fuel consumption are expected to decrease, contributing to lower urban air pollution. Improved access to tribal regions in Palghar district may also facilitate social and economic inclusion, enabling communities to participate more fully in regional development initiatives.
