In a significant push towards improving passenger experience, the Ministry of Railways has embarked on an ambitious redevelopment project under the ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’ (ABSS), focusing on the upgradation of 77 railway stations across the Southern Railway network. As of now, work has commenced on 71 of these stations, bringing significant improvements to the region’s travel infrastructure. The ongoing initiative, outlined by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to modernise railway stations with a focus on passenger amenities, accessibility, and overall convenience.
The ABSS project takes a long-term, phased approach, where each station is being redeveloped based on a comprehensive Master Plan. The improvements include major enhancements in station access, waiting areas, public conveniences, and platform resurfacing. The inclusion of lifts, escalators, and free Wi-Fi services will ensure that stations meet contemporary needs, particularly for differently-abled passengers. Additionally, the introduction of the ‘One Station One Product’ initiative at these stations is designed to promote local businesses, offering a unique cultural and commercial experience to passengers.
In the Chennai division alone, 15 railway stations are undergoing substantial redevelopment, including major hubs like Arakkonam, Ambattur, and Egmore. This overhaul is part of the larger Rs. 4,313 crore initiative, covering the Southern Railway and South Western Railway zones. Of this, Rs. 2,506 crore has already been spent over the past three years. The upgrades are prioritised based on passenger footfall, ensuring that high-demand stations are equipped with enhanced infrastructure to cater to the growing needs of commuters.
From a sustainability perspective, the ABSS project represents a major step towards greener, more efficient rail travel. The station redevelopment plans integrate eco-friendly measures, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of the transportation sector. In addition, the focus on local product kiosks helps support regional economies, creating a more sustainable and self-reliant ecosystem for urban centres. By modernising these stations, the Ministry of Railways is not only enhancing convenience but also contributing to sustainable urban growth, fostering a cleaner, more connected future.
