70% of Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade to Open in March, Offering Scenic Views and Recreation

Mumbai residents can look forward to enjoying a major new recreational space as 70% of the sea-facing promenade along the city’s Coastal Road is set to open in March 2025. The stretch, running from Priyadarshini Park (PDP) at Breach Candy to Haji Ali, will offer citizens a scenic, vibrant environment for walking, jogging, and cycling while providing a stunning view of the sea.

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, which has been under construction for several years, aims to create a continuous 7.5 km long promenade stretching between Breach Candy and the Worli end of the sea link. The initial phase, expected to be complete by March, will cover significant sections, including parts of Worli. According to a civic official, the promenade will feature jogging, walking, and cycling tracks, along with plenty of seating and lush trees for visitors to relax and enjoy the view.

The BMC’s ambition is to fully open the entire sea-facing promenade by early May 2025. Once completed, the promenade will feature 20 underpasses, allowing pedestrians and cyclists easy access to different sections, regardless of the heavy traffic along the coastal road. The new infrastructure is expected to bring much-needed public space for the residents of Mumbai, offering them an opportunity to experience the coastal beauty of the city in a way that was previously unavailable. One of the standout features of the promenade will be its close proximity to the sea. The Worli end of the promenade will include steps, allowing visitors to experience the ocean waves up close. This area will be ideal for people wanting to connect with the sea, especially considering the low tides in the region that make the shoreline more accessible.

This new space forms part of the larger vision outlined in the master plan developed by infrastructure firm AECOM. The project is expected to add nearly 70 hectares of open space to the city, a much-needed addition in one of the world’s most densely populated urban areas. Of this, about 70% will feature green cover, providing a significant environmental boost, while the remaining 30% will be dedicated to walkways, cycle tracks, and other promenade features. The promenade will have several entry points spread across the city, making it accessible to a wide range of people. These include major access points at Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall, and Madraswadi in Worli. The parks along the promenade will operate between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., while the promenade itself will remain open round-the-clock, allowing for evening walks, cycling, or simply relaxing by the shore.

For the people of Mumbai, this new development offers not just a space to unwind but also an opportunity to reconnect with nature in the heart of a bustling metropolis. The addition of such recreational facilities is likely to enhance the quality of life for residents, giving them a peaceful escape from the urban chaos, right by the sea. This project is also a step towards more sustainable urban development in Mumbai, blending green spaces with modern infrastructure. As the city continues to grow, projects like the Coastal Road Promenade provide valuable public spaces that will not only improve the aesthetic and environmental quality of the city but also foster a healthier and more active lifestyle for its citizens. With much more to come, the development of the Coastal Road Promenade is a bright spot in Mumbai’s ongoing urban transformation.
