6-Lane Lucknow Link Expressway to Connect Delhi With Purvanchal

A new six-lane Lucknow Link Expressway is being planned in Uttar Pradesh to strengthen connectivity between western Uttar Pradesh and the Purvanchal region, effectively enabling smoother travel from Delhi to eastern parts of the state through an integrated expressway network.

The proposed greenfield expressway will be about 50.94 kilometres long and will directly connect the Agra–Lucknow Expressway with the Purvanchal Expressway. This connection will allow vehicles travelling from Delhi and western UP to bypass congested urban routes around Lucknow and move seamlessly toward eastern Uttar Pradesh. Officials said the project will initially be developed as a six-lane access-controlled expressway, with provisions for future expansion to eight lanes. The project cost is estimated at around ₹2,864.82 crore, and construction is expected to be completed within 36 months after work begins.

The expressway will start near the 294-km milestone of the Agra–Lucknow Expressway and connect to the 6-km point of the Purvanchal Expressway. By linking these two high-speed corridors, the project will create a continuous expressway route stretching from western Uttar Pradesh toward eastern districts such as Varanasi and Ghazipur. The Purvanchal Expressway, which runs about 340.8 km from Lucknow to Ghazipur, already serves as a major transport corridor for eastern Uttar Pradesh and was inaugurated in 2021.

Transport planners say the new link expressway will play a critical role in integrating Uttar Pradesh’s growing expressway network. Currently, vehicles travelling between western and eastern UP often pass through Lucknow city, leading to traffic congestion and longer travel times. Once the link road becomes operational, long-distance traffic—particularly freight and logistics vehicles—will be able to bypass the city entirely. This is expected to reduce travel time, improve fuel efficiency and ease congestion on urban roads.

The corridor is also designed for high-speed travel with a design speed of about 120 km per hour and will include major infrastructure elements such as bridges, railway overbridges, flyovers, interchanges and multiple underpasses. The new expressway is expected to benefit several cities across Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Ghazipur, by strengthening connectivity between industrial and commercial centres.

Improved logistics infrastructure could help boost trade, tourism and industrial development across the region. Real estate development and logistics parks are also likely to grow along the corridor as connectivity improves. The project is part of a broader strategy by the Uttar Pradesh government to build one of India’s largest expressway networks. The state already has multiple operational corridors—including the Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal expressways—and several more are under construction.

Infrastructure experts say the Lucknow Link Expressway will serve as a crucial connector within this expanding grid, helping create a continuous high-speed road network linking Delhi with eastern Uttar Pradesh.
