Aviation Connectivity Boom: Over 100 New Domestic Air Routes Launched to Boost Regional Travel in 2024
India’s aviation sector experienced a major expansion with the introduction of over 100 new domestic air routes, enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic growth. Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet played pivotal roles, focusing on underserved tier-II and tier-III cities. This expansion aligns with the Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (UDAN) scheme, launched in 2016, aimed at making air travel more affordable and accessible to all.
IndiGo launched several new routes, including flights from Bengaluru to Puducherry and Hyderabad, and expanded its Northeast India network. Air India and Air India Express also contributed, with new flights connecting Port Blair to Bengaluru and Vijayawada to Bengaluru, strengthening regional links. These efforts are expected to stimulate tourism, business, and regional development, improving access to essential services in smaller towns. As air traffic grows, infrastructure investments are underway to accommodate the demand, including the development of regional airports and upgrades to existing facilities. In October 2024, India’s domestic air traffic saw a 5.3% increase, with IndiGo maintaining a dominant market share of 63.3%. This expansion is set to transform the Indian aviation landscape, bridging the urban-rural divide and positioning India as a global aviation hub.
The surge in new air routes is anticipated to drive significant economic growth. Improved regional connectivity will help reduce travel times, enhance access to smaller cities, and foster tourism, business, and employment opportunities. To accommodate the rising demand for air travel, India is also making significant investments in airport infrastructure, including the construction of new regional airports and upgrades to existing terminals and services. These developments ensure a smoother travel experience for passengers. As of October 2024, India’s domestic air traffic saw a 5.3% increase in passengers, with IndiGo continuing to dominate the market with a share of 63.3%. This expansion supports India’s aspirations of becoming a global aviation hub while driving regional economic growth.
