Ghatkopar Railway Station Revamp Set to Complete by 2027 with Modern Infrastructure

Ghatkopar railway station, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport hubs, is undergoing a major transformation with an ambitious revamp that aims to elevate the station to a model of modern infrastructure. The redevelopment, spearheaded by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), is set to be completed by 2027, with improvements already underway. Sunil Udasi, MRVC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, assured that the project is progressing as planned, with a focus on both timely delivery and commuter convenience.

The revamp is being carried out in multiple phases, with Phase I already yielding visible improvements. Completed in December 2023, Phase I brought several new developments to Ghatkopar, including a 75×12-meter foot over bridge (FOB), a 15×45-meter east deck, and a new booking office with four counters. Additionally, six escalators were installed, with the latest one commissioned in December 2024. The final stages of this phase are focused on additional amenities such as a two-wheeler parking area and a new façade on the east side, although work has been slightly delayed due to the removal of an obstructive municipal toilet. Phase II, which is currently in progress, includes significant upgrades aimed at further improving passenger facilities. Two new 12-meter-wide, 75-meter-long FOBs are being constructed — one at the CSMT-end and the other at the Kalyan-end — to provide better connectivity. A 300-meter-long, 8-meter-wide elevated west deck will be built above platform 1, with construction already underway, including pile foundation work for deck columns. The development also includes a 4-meter-wide skywalk connecting platform 4 to the north-end municipal FOB, along with service buildings for the GRP (Government Railway Police) and electrical rooms.

The station will also feature enhanced vertical transportation, including six staircases, four double-discharge staircases, seven escalators, and three lifts to improve accessibility and ease of movement. For added commuter convenience, a G+1 structure is being constructed on the east side with ticket counters and office spaces. Udasi highlighted the significant progress in the project’s various components, including the completion of the foundation for the south FOB and ongoing work on the north FOB and west deck. The transformation of Ghatkopar station is a critical part of MRVC’s broader vision to create a commuter-friendly infrastructure that caters to the needs of Mumbai’s growing population while ensuring smoother and more efficient travel for daily commuters. By 2027, Ghatkopar is set to become a modern transportation hub, offering better services, enhanced access, and a more comfortable experience for commuters, solidifying MRVC’s commitment to improving Mumbai’s railway infrastructure.
