India gears up for the festive season, the Indian Railways is set to roll out an impressive 7,000 special trains to accommodate the surge in passenger traffic during Diwali and Chhath Puja. This initiative, announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aims to facilitate an additional two lakh passengers daily, reflecting a robust response to the increasing demand for travel during this culturally significant period.
Last year, the Railways operated 4,500 special trains to meet the festive rush, but this year’s enhancement marks a substantial leap forward. The Northern Railway (NR) has taken the lead, announcing around 3,050 special trips, which constitutes a staggering 181% increase compared to the 1,082 trips made in 2023. Such figures not only indicate the Railways’ commitment to ensuring smooth travel but also highlight the growing trend of people returning to their hometowns to celebrate with family and friends. In addition to the special trains, extra coaches will be added to existing trains, further boosting capacity and providing much-needed relief to passengers. With the influx of people expected to travel to eastern parts of the country, the NR’s strategic focus underscores the Railways’ adaptability in responding to changing passenger dynamics.
From a sustainability perspective, the Railways’ decision to run additional trains aligns with eco-friendly travel initiatives. Trains are often considered a more sustainable mode of transport compared to road travel, emitting significantly lower greenhouse gases per passenger. By facilitating mass transportation, the Railways not only reduces traffic congestion but also minimises the carbon footprint associated with individual car journeys during this busy season. The emotional aspect of this initiative cannot be overlooked. For many, travelling by train is not just about reaching a destination; it’s a cherished experience filled with nostalgia and joy. Passengers express a profound sense of belonging as they traverse the landscapes of their homeland, reinforcing family ties and cultural traditions. The overwhelming sentiment among travellers reflects a yearning to reconnect, especially after recent years of restrictions.
