Mumbai’s ambitious coastal road project, preparations are underway for the erection of a massive 2,000-metric-ton arch bridge, a pivotal element of the infrastructure initiative. Originating from Mazagon Dock’s Nhava unit, the arch bridge embarked on its journey on Wednesday, with plans slated for erection to commence by the morning of April 26, with April 27 held in reserve as a contingency in case of adverse weather conditions.
As of Wednesday evening, the barge carrying the arch bridge had traversed past Colaba along the western shore, making steady progress towards its destination at the Worli site of the coastal road project. Given that the barge lacks its own propulsion system, it is being towed by tugs, with one primary tug responsible for propulsion and two auxiliary tugs providing support during transit. Hindustan Construction Company and Hyundai Development Corporation, the joint venture overseeing the project, have collaborated with Freight Wings Pvt Ltd to facilitate various logistical aspects, including jack-up operations, lifting, loadout, barge management, marine transportation, and eventual bridge erection. This monumental arch bridge will serve as a crucial link connecting the right-hand side arm of the Mumbai coastal road with the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link, enhancing connectivity and easing traffic congestion in the bustling metropolis. Originally scheduled for transportation from Mazagon Dock’s Nhava Unit on April 21, the operation had to be deferred due to adverse weather conditions, underscoring the significance of favourable climatic conditions for such intricate logistical manoeuvres.
The forthcoming erection of the arch bridge marks a significant milestone in the progress of the Mumbai coastal road project, signalling tangible advancements in its realisation. With meticulous planning and collaboration among stakeholders, the project aims to transform Mumbai’s transportation landscape, offering enhanced connectivity and facilitating smoother mobility for residents and commuters alike.
