The recent bout of heavy rainfall in Telangana has resulted in significant damage to the state’s irrigation infrastructure. Over the past five days, more than 600 irrigation tanks and canals have either breached or sustained severe damage, necessitating a considerable financial outlay for repairs. According to estimates from the Irrigation Department, the cost for permanent repairs is projected at approximately ₹300 crore, with an additional ₹35 crore required for immediate, temporary fixes.
The damage has been widespread, impacting various regions across the state. Out of the 600 affected structures, 230 irrigation lakes, also known locally as cheruvus, have breached completely. Furthermore, another 160 lakes have experienced partial breaches. In addition to these lakes, 110 canals have been fully breached, and 50 others have suffered partial damage.
The most severely affected districts include Mulugu, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mahabubabad, Nalgonda, and Khammam. The scale of the damage underscores the severity of the rainfall, which has disrupted water management and irrigation systems crucial for the region’s agricultural and water supply needs. In response to the situation, the state Irrigation Minister held a video conference with irrigation officials to address the crisis. During the meeting, the Minister instructed officials to expedite the process of calling for short tenders for the repair works. This action aims to expedite the restoration of the damaged infrastructure, beginning with administrative sanction procedures.
The Minister also expressed concerns regarding the state of minor lift irrigation projects, eight of which were reported damaged. Engineers have been directed to remain vigilant, particularly concerning the condition of shutters and head regulators to prevent further issues. The extensive damage to irrigation infrastructure highlights the need for prompt and effective response measures to mitigate the impact of such extreme weather events on essential services and agriculture in the region.
