Indian Railways has sanctioned two major rail infrastructure projects totalling ₹21,550 crore, aimed at boosting connectivity between Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The new Manmad–Indore rail line and the Bhusaval–Khandwa third and fourth lines are expected to reduce congestion, enhance freight and passenger services, and strengthen cross-state logistics. These developments mark a transformative step in regional mobility and economic integration.
A significant ₹18,036 crore has been allocated for a greenfield 309 km rail line between Manmad in Maharashtra and Indore in Madhya Pradesh. This direct corridor aims to slash travel time and relieve pressure on existing routes. By linking key industrial hubs such as Nashik, Aurangabad, and Indore, the new route is expected to improve supply chain efficiency, enhance passenger convenience, and stimulate economic and tourism activity in both states.
The second initiative—worth ₹3,514 crore—involves constructing third and fourth lines along the Bhusaval–Khandwa section. This high-traffic route connects northern and southern India and frequently experiences delays due to congestion. The additional lines will support simultaneous two-way train movement, improve punctuality, and increase load capacity. The move is expected to streamline both freight and passenger services while supporting Indian Railways’ broader strategy for high-density corridor expansion.
Both projects complement ongoing electrification and station modernisation works in central India, reinforcing the focus on integrated transport infrastructure. Once operational, these lines will offer smoother movement of goods and passengers across state borders. Industry stakeholders suggest the new connectivity will boost trade, improve access to markets, and reduce transit times, making rail transport a more viable alternative to road networks for commercial logistics and regional travel.
These initiatives are aligned with Indian Railways’ national strategy to modernise infrastructure, expand capacity, and improve efficiency. By connecting key industrial belts, agricultural zones, and urban centres, the projects are expected to foster long-term regional growth. Construction is set to begin once environmental clearances and land acquisitions are secured.
