Lucknow Traffic Diversions in Place for Defence Expo Event
Lucknow commuters are set to face significant route changes from 4 PM on June 14 through Sunday evening due to the Defence Expo and a large police recruitment ceremony near Vrindavan Colony. With over 60,000 recruits expected and government events planned, traffic authorities have rerouted 20 major road sections. Motorists are advised to plan journeys, expect delays, and use public transport where possible.
The event will affect key access points surrounding the Defence Expo Ground in Vrindavan Colony. Traffic officials have systematically closed or restricted routes to manage motor volumes and ensure security. Several residential transit routes, including Sector-7C to 9A and 8 to 10, are closed or restricted, with alternative routing via Telibagh via Utrethiya Railway Underpass. Canal Road between Sector-9 and 10 has also been shut.
Additional redirection includes closures at Gyan Sarovar Bridge and Sector-15, with traffic diverted via Chiraiyabag and Telibagh routes. Junctions at Sector-16 and 18 will be off-limits toward the event site. Commuters from Kalindi Park heading to Sector-12 will be directed through the PGI trisection, while Utrethiya and Telibagh Squares will have traffic rerouted via Banglabazar, Khazana Market, and Pama Smriti Upvan. Raebareli Road traffic heading into the city will now be diverted via Mohanlalganj town to join the Kanpur-Lucknow Road.
Transport managers emphasise public transit use during this weekend surge. City buses and shared taxis are expected to operate on adjusted schedules to accommodate rerouted roadways. Private vehicle users are urged to plan ahead using traffic updates and navigation apps to avoid affected zones. Traffic flow studies indicate that closures around Vrindavan Colony can increase journey times on parallel roads by up to 30 per cent, especially during peak hours.
The ceremony, during which appointment letters will be issued to over 60,000 newly recruited police constables, adds to event complexity, drawing recruits, dignitaries, and family members. This dual event of a military expo alongside a mass recruitment underscores the importance of strategic traffic management. Previous occasions at this venue have seen significant disruptions, prompting authorities to deploy additional traffic officers, install temporary signage, and employ mobile traffic boards
Timely rerouting and public alerts are essential to maintaining smooth mobility and safety. The careful planning of diversions and public transit adjustments highlights the city’s growing capabilities in managing complex civic events. For residents and visitors alike, awareness and flexibility will be key to minimizing disruptions while supporting these significant civic occasions. Commuters are advised to stay informed via official traffic channels and plan journeys accordingly.
